According to the American intelligence agency FBI, 20,000 people are among those robbed by Indian fraudsters, the majority of whom are senior citizens, who suffered losses of billions of rupees in the last two years.
The organized fraud in the shadow of India's call center industry has been exposed by the FBI through an undercover operation, a mission overseen by the US Embassy in New Delhi.
According to the Times of India, US citizens lost more than $10 billion in 2022 to phishing gangs and fraudsters operating from India.
Fraudsters running illegal call centers in India are targeting US-based people, especially senior citizens, on the pretext of providing technical support.
The American intelligence agency FBI has started a crackdown against Indian thugs and many people have been arrested in this regard.
Earlier this month, the Delhi Police arrested three people who were running illegal call centers in the capital. One of his accomplices has been arrested in Canada and the other in New Jersey.
Sohail Dawood, an official attached to the US embassy in Delhi, told The Times of India that Americans were defrauded to the tune of Rs 8,000 crore this year in romance scams.
